dry eye and punctum plugs

Dr Barnard and Mr Levit have a special interest in dry eye. The tears are a complex structure made up of three layers, mucin, water and oil. The common condition of “dry eye” shows itself when one or more of these components is deficient. Symptoms include a feeling of dryness, grittiness, itching, burning and even bouts of over watering (known as paradoxical tearing”).

Once the type of deficiency has been diagnosed, help can be prescribed to improve the tears and produce reduced symptoms or the ability to wear contact lenses comfortably again.

One of Dr Barnard's specialities is the fitting of tiny silicon plugs into the tear drainage hole in the eye lids. The plugs are designed to stop the drainage of the tears thus keeping the eyes wetter and lubricated with the natural tears.

We receive referrals for this technique from other optometrists, GPs and ophthalmologists.
