diabetes

All of our optometrists are experienced in Diabetic Co-Management. Like our regular patients, our diabetic patients have their retinas routinely photographed. Reports are sent routinely to the GP and Diabetic Physician.

The most visually disabling consequence of diabetic retinopathy is diabetic macular oedema, which is very difficult to detect with conventional means used in routine ophthalmic practice. Barnard and Levit are able to use the Stratus OCT technology to detect the most subtle macular changes in diabetic and vascular hypertensive individuals. We therefore recommend that all patients suffering from diabetes and vascular hypertension undergo optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the macula and the optic nerve.

Dr Barnard lectures on Diabetes in Optometric Practice at both undergraduate and post graduate level in the UK as well as having taught this subject in Norway and Hong Kong.
